Companies as Products

I was reading The Negative’s repeated notes about “… productization of society which resulted in abstraction of it …” “… the non-stoppable tendency to make everything a product …” and how “the invention of neon lamps, the meeting point of art, technique and consummation, showed how culture is a product …” and all the talks about reproducibility, that I thought is it all about consuming? When a web designer builds a page, is she just producing something to be consumed, or the whole .com tide? I didn’t think so! What I thought was “participation in creation of a world that others will inhabit”. When my company designs and creates an authentication mechanism, we’re also playing with your identity and the way you can prove it in this world.

But sadly, those notes are notes from a pre-copyright era which a mind I think not used with registering patents will describe the world with. Patents and copyright are the capitalism’s way of controlling reproduction. I said sadly because a product is no longer those labeled parts of the new world that I created, but the company that owns it. It’s the company that is bought, merged, sold and consumed.

Rationality in Action

I’m still into Searle :) Anyway, in his book “Rationality in Action”, he describes classical model of rationality with these proverbs:

  • Aristotle: deliberation is always about means, never about ends.
  • Hume: reason is and ought to be the slave of passion.
  • Kant: he who wills the ends wills the means.

In a nutshell, rational decision making is selecting means that will enable us to achieve our ends.

In this book, he tries to debate theories of rationality and object this classical model, since (and this is one of those “ends”) he thinks that it represents human rationality as a more complex version of ape rationality (if you put an ape in a room with a stick, a box and bananas high up, after a while he would move the box under the bananas and use the stick to get them).

Problem of Rationality

Persistent philosophical problems (like the problem of rationality) share a general logical structure:

How is that p, given that it appears to be certainly q, where it appears that q makes it impossible that p?

The problems of free will, consciousness, ethical values and … can all be expressed in this form. So the problem of rationality:

How can there be rational decision making in a world where everything that occurs happens a result of brute, blind and natural casual forces?

This book is a continuum of his other thoughts, so before hand, we can predict that any model that can be modeled using information theory, is not human rationality.

The tentative hypothesis

One of the objectives of CogAff project is to understand the similarities and differences between various kinds of machines:

  • machines which transform and use force and energy,
  • machines which reorganize matter (at microscopic or macroscopic scales)
  • Machines which process information, i.e. acquire, transform, store, interpret, search for, or transmit information about themselves or other things, including non-existent things!

This includes understanding the relations between machines of various sorts, i.e. explaining how a particular sort of information processing machine may "inhabit" various types of physical machines of the first two types; and how it is important for the study of consciousness.

The tentative hypothesis: we can enhance our understanding of what these aspects might be by designing, building, analyzing, and experimenting with virtual-machine architectures which attempt to elaborate the hypothesis. They expect this process to lead to gradual refinement and extensions of many of our pre-theoretical concepts of mind as “architecture based” concepts, partly mirroring the development of other pre-scientific concepts under the influence of scientific advances

One day, Fritz, struggling with a design problem said “I’m looking for the perfect abstraction”. Nice.

March 26th

Ever since I was seventeen and Kid gave them to me, Pink Floyd has inspired me:

#

Look at him now, his paler somehow

But his coming around

He’s starting to choke, it’s been so long since he spoke

Now he can have the words right from my mouth

#

And with these words, I can see

Clear through the clouds, that covered me

Just give it time then speak my name

Now we can hear ourselves again

#

I’m holding out for the day

When all the clouds have blown away

I’m with you now, can speak your name

Now we can hear ourselves again
